Lady Bird Lake, formerly known as Town Lake, is a local hot spot for the avid runner and speed walker. The Hike and Bike Trail is packed with locals who can always seem to fit in a workout despite the hustle and bustle of city life. Spending time on the hike and bike trail with your dog or running buddy fills the need for a good workout but it also make a busy city feel like a tranquil trail in the Texas hill country. The trail is packed with beautiful trees and runs along Lady Bird Lake. You will not only see a lot of people on the trail, but you will also see almost every breed of dog running and having a blast. What is great about the Hike and Bike Trail is that there are clearly marked routes ranging from 3 miles up to 10 miles around the entire lake. If you prefer hiking over running or biking, you will absolutely love Barton Creek Greenbelt. Hiking through the greenbelt is ideal in the spring because you can jump right into the creek's swimming areas to cool off or relax. The Barton Creek Greenbelt offers hiking fans over 809 acres of rugged Austin terrain. You will also find cliff walls here that many rock climbers enjoy climbing. You will also see a lot of dogs playing and splashing in the water as well as hiking with their owners. Austin is a dog friendly town and you will likely see almost every hiker with a furry friend. You will find many cyclists in Austin either enjoying the trails or riding their bike to and from work. People are serious about biking here and deserve just as much respect for their skills as Lance Armstrong does. If biking is more of your thing, than I suggest going to the Veloway in South Austin. The Veloway is a near perfect 5K, or 3.17 miles. The trails is paved and is in the scenic area of the Slaughter Creek Metropolitan Park. The trail is very wide so as to accommodate the many bikers enjoying the beautiful outdoors. The trails is open from sun up until sun down so you can enjoy a ride before or after work, and of course all day on the weekends. If you are new to running or prefer walking, don't let the seasoned runners intimidate you from enjoying the trails. You will find many groups that meet up for training. A casual walker can train to be one of the best speed walkers and enjoy the trails with a group of motivated individuals. The same goes for biking. There is always a friendly face on the trails that will offer advice, give great biking tips, or will help you along the way. Join a group or get out and enjoy the trials with your friends, family, and of course your dog!
